Beyond Education

Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained. James A. Garfield

Sadly, the notion of freedom and justice are missing elements in our purpose for education. Schools can not only teach, but teach about freedom, and practice freedoms too. Likewise, let's not just teach about justice, but act upon this justice in learning efforts within our schools.

Voting should be taught at schools. And, voting should occur at schools as well so as to have living labratories for learning.

Traditional Permits Won't Surfice

Any organization can file a permit to utilize school facilities. Organization discrimination is not tolerated. The school district treats all interested parties fairly. Church groups, political groups, and other types of organizations get equal and fair treatments.

Building permits are filed with the school's front office staff. In the end, the school principal has a big say in the use of the building.

Community meetings with less than 30 people in attendance that occur in the building while the regular custodial staff is scheduled have no fees.

However, the district does not need to give any community group access to a building more than one time each week. So, Toastmasters could meet on Mondays. The book club could meet on Tuesdays. Wednesdays could be for media junkies, Thursday for investors club and Fridays for a dad's fitness group.
